Trincomalee, popularly known as Trinco, has a huge, natural harbour, however it was never developed – apart from being a base of the Sri Lanka navy today, and being guarded by Fort Frederick, which bears the date 1676 above its arch. The Train trip will take you through 56 manmade tunnels, places to look out for are Nawalapitiya – Hatton, and Haputale – Ella, grey stone cliffs and rivers will flash past your window with occasional views of enormous waterfalls cascading down the mountainside, while the Train keeps climbing steadily through to Hatton then Nanu Oya, if you are going to Nuwara Eliya you need to break journey here, if not, passing “Adams peak” standing sentinel in the south an important Buddhist pilgrimage site, through the Horton plains National Park then Pattipola and Ohiya reaching its highest elevation of 1890 meters above sea level, the Train starts descending towards Ella and at the end of the line you will find the Badulla Train station sitting on top of the line, known as the “Demodara loop”, and the Trains passes underneath it before coming to rest on the platform.

Leave after an early dinner for the Rakawa Turtle sanctuary. The months of January to June are when turtles wade ashore to lay their eggs and sighting is quite frequent. Although nesting does occur during the rest of the year it not as common.
Rakewa is a two kilometre stretch of protected coastline which is a nesting haven for five species of marine turtles. You will be taken to an informal information centre located in a hut on the beach. The tour and briefing is conducted in torchlight as the hut has no electricity. Later, sit on the beach and wait for word of nesting turtles. It is possible to approach them only after they have dug their pit and begun the process of laying between 100 – 200 eggs.
